주요 내용

  • The Australian Immi App lets eligible visa applicants submit facial biometrics and passport details from a smartphone, without attending an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC).
  • Eligibility depends on three things: a personal identifiers letter, a Visa Lodgement Number (VLN) starting with "AUI," and valid passport details.
  • As of March 2026, the app is available in 47 countries, following an expansion that added 13 new countries earlier in the year.
  • Compatible devices need NFC functionality, internet connectivity, camera access, and location services, running Android or iOS 16.0 or later.
  • The app does not replace ABCCs entirely, and some applicants may still be required to attend in person depending on their biometrics instructions.
  • Using the app may make biometric submission more convenient, but it does not guarantee faster visa processing.

If you are planning to move to Australia, you generally need an ImmiAccount. ImmiAccount is the Department of Home Affairs’ online portal for managing Australian visa applications. Using it, you can manage different submissions, track visa progress, and check important updates from the Department of Home Affairs. The ImmiAccount is only available as a website, and the Department of Home Affairs has also introduced the Australian Immi App. Here's a detailed guide on what this app entails.

What Is the Australian Immi App?

Launched in 2024 by the Department of Home Affairs, the Immi App is an Australian government mobile application that streamlines biometric collection, a vital part of the visa application process.

What Does It Actually Do?

The mobile app provides a secure, convenient way for eligible applicants to submit their live facial image (facial biometrics) and passport details as part of their visa application.

Why Was It Introduced?

The app was introduced to digitise the biometric collection process. Eligible applicants can easily provide their biometrics without visiting an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC). The app is now available in many countries as part of Australia's offshore biometric collection program.

Who Is Eligible to Use the Australian Immi App?

Not all visa applicants are eligible to use the Australian Immi App. Here is a breakdown of the eligibility for using this app:

Three Conditions You Must Meet

To submit biometrics through this app, applicants must:

  • Provide personal identifiers (their biometrics) letter
  • Provide their Visa Lodgement Number (VLN)
  • Provide valid passport details

The VLN Requirement - The Detail Most Applicants Miss

When submitting the VLN, applicants must remember that it should start with "AUI." If not, they will have to visit a biometrics collection centre to provide biometrics.

Who Cannot Use the App?

Applicants who are not in countries where this app is available, or who have not previously provided their biometrics at an Australian biometrics collection centre, cannot use it.

Rollout History - How the Program Expanded

Following the initial rollout, the Immi App expanded to 34 countries in late 2025. In 2026, it was further expanded to 13 new countries, including Albania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Cambodia, and Somalia (third country nationals).

What If Your Country Isn't Listed Yet?

If your country isn't yet listed, you will have to visit the biometrics collection centre, as you cannot use the mobile application to submit your identity information.

Technical Requirements - What Phone Do You Need?

Here is a breakdown of the app's technical requirements for applicants to refer to:

Supported Devices

Android smartphones

iOS smartphones (iOS 16.0 or later)

Devices must support Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality, internet connectivity, camera access, and location services.

How to Check If Your Device Is Compatible

You can check the instructions available on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to see if the app is compatible.

Where to Download the Australian Immi App

In eligible countries, the app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Step-by-Step: How to Use the Australian Immi App

To use the app, follow this step-by-step process:

Step 1 - Enter Your Visa Lodgement Number (VLN)

Refer to your "requirement to provide personal identifiers biometrics" letter to find your VLN. It will be a code that starts with AUI and has letters and numbers. You can enter it either manually or by scanning the barcode on your letter.

Step 2 - Scan Your Passport Identity Page

Before this step, enable your phone's NFC. Open your passport to the personal data page and use your device to scan the page and electronic chip (if available). The red outline will turn green once the passport is aligned correctly.

Step 3 - Read the Electronic Chip (If Applicable)

If your passport has an electronic chip (passport chip), place your phone directly on top of it. A progress bar will appear on your device (Apple) or a reading chip message will display (Android). Don't move your phone until the scan is complete.

Step 4 - Verify Your Passport Information

After the scan, your passport information will be available on your screen. Review it before proceeding.

Step 5 - Take and Submit Your Facial Photo

Next, take your photo as prompted by the app. Ensure there is ample lighting, and once the red oval turns green, your picture will get captured automatically.

After Submission - What Happens Next?

After you submit, the app will send the details you provided to the Department of Home Affairs.

Australian Immi App vs. Attending an ABCC - What's the Difference?

Both options are available to visa applicants, but it is important to understand how they differ.

Does the App Replace ABCCs Entirely?

While the Immi App simplifies the biometrics submission process, it does not entirely replace ABCCs. Some applicants may still be required to attend an ABCC depending on their eligibility and biometrics instructions from the Department.

Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting

Here are some common mistakes and their possible solutions to keep in mind:

My VLN Doesn't Start With AUI or AUH - What Do I Do?

If your VLN doesn't include AUI or AUH, you must visit the ABCC to provide your personal identifiers.

The App Says My Device Isn't Compatible

If your device is not compatible, try checking on other available devices (Android instead of iOS, or vice versa). If it still does not work, you will have to submit your biometrics at an ABCC.

The Passport Scan Keeps Failing

Make sure you have aligned the phone camera and passport properly. Also, the camera should remain unobstructed.

The NFC Chip Read Isn't Working

Make sure NFC is turned on in your device. The phone should be placed on top of it so that it touches the chip. Move your phone slowly around the passport, so the app can recognise the NFC chip.

My Photo Was Rejected - What Does the App Accept?

Your photo should be taken against a light-coloured wall, with no objects in view, and your eyes open and visible. Anything covering your face or eyes, or heavy makeup, can cause problems.

My ImmiAccount Hasn't Updated After 24 Hours

Your ImmiAccount should typically get updated within 24 hours of submitting. If not, you can check if the Department of Home Affairs has requested further information. Additionally, you can consult a migration lawyer to coordinate on your behalf.

I Submitted the Wrong Information - Can I Redo It?

The app does not store your data after submission. Hence, you cannot go back and resubmit your details. In such cases, it is best to contact the Department of Home Affairs directly to report any errors.

Does Using the Immi App Affect My Visa Application or Processing Time?

Using the app may make biometric submission more convenient for eligible applicants, but it does not guarantee faster visa processing.

What the Immi App Means for Your Australian Visa Journey

Having the Immi App is significantly helpful when applying for an Australian visa. As an eligible applicant, you may be able to complete your biometric submission remotely using your smartphone instead of attending an ABCC.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Australian Immi App

Is the Australian Immi App the same as ImmiAccount?

No. The Immi App is a mobile-only application that is specifically for submitting your biometrics. ImmiAccount is the main online portal for all visa matters.

Do I need to use the app if I've never applied for an Australian visa before?

Eligibility depends on the biometrics instructions issued by the Department and whether your VLN qualifies for app-based submission.

Can I use the app if I'm applying for a visitor visa, student visa, or partner visa?

Yes. The only thing that matters is eligibility, so you can use the app for any visa type that requires biometrics.

What visa types require biometrics?

Applicants from countries in the biometrics program, or those applying for a visa that is part of it, must submit their biometrics. These generally include skilled work visas, parent visas, partner visas, and student visas.

Does the app collect my fingerprints?

No. It will only collect your facial image.

Is my biometric data safe - where is it stored?

The app does not store any biometric data. Once you submit your biometrics, they are sent to the Department of Home Affairs.

Can children use the Australian Immi App?

Yes, they can, provided they have been officially invited to submit biometrics. Legal guardians must operate the app on their behalf.

What if I don't have a smartphone - can someone else's phone be used?

Yes. You only need your own VLN and passport to use the app.

Is the eVisitor or ETA affected by the Immi App?

No, they are not.

Will the app eventually be available in all countries?

Migration updates indicate the Department may continue expanding app availability across Europe, South Asia, Mekong, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
