Skilled professionals working and living in Brisbane
Employers need to show their business is operating lawfully, is financially viable, and has a genuine need for an overseas worker in the nominated role.
Before sponsoring anyone, most businesses need to be approved as a Standard Business Sponsor by the Department of Home Affairs.
Sponsors must meet ongoing obligations, including proper employment conditions, accurate record keeping, compliance with the Fair Work Act, and making sure visa holders are only employed in the approved role.
Queensland employers can access overseas talent where local recruitment hasn't met workforce demand, subject to sponsorship approval.

Nomination by an approved Australian employer
Occupation listed on the relevant skilled occupation list
Skills, qualifications, and work experience requirements
英語能力要求
Health and character requirements
Passport and identification documents
Valid identity documents are needed to confirm nationality and personal details.
Employer nomination documentation
This includes sponsorship approval, nomination forms, and supporting evidence from the employer, including evidence of labour market testing where this applies to the nominated occupation.
Employment contracts and job offer letters
A formal contract or offer setting out salary, role, and employment conditions is required, and the offered salary needs to meet both the relevant income threshold and the market salary rate for the role.
Skills assessment and qualification documents
Applicants must provide evidence of qualifications, licences, and skills assessments where these apply.
英語測試結果
Approved English test results must be provided to show the required language proficiency.
We assess both the employer's and the applicant's eligibility to work out the right visa pathway and requirements.
The employer applies for Standard Business Sponsorship approval, then nominates the position in line with the Department's requirements, including meeting the relevant income threshold and market salary rate.
Once sponsorship and nomination are approved, the visa application is lodged with the Department of Home Affairs through ImmiAccount, together with supporting documents.
We help throughout the assessment process, including responding to requests for further information and keeping the sponsorship compliant until a decision is made.
Using a lawyer helps make sure both the employer and the employee meet strict sponsorship and visa requirements. We help prepare accurate applications, reduce compliance risk, and work through complex eligibility issues. Legal support also improves the quality of what's submitted, helps avoid common refusal reasons, and keeps sponsorship, nomination, and visa stages moving in the right order.
Government visa application fees
Effective from 1 July 2026, the primary applicant government charge is AUD 4,015 for the Skills in Demand visa (Subclass 482), plus a separate nomination fee of AUD 330. For the Employer Nomination Scheme visa (Subclass 186), the primary applicant charge is AUD 6,140, plus a nomination fee of AUD 540. For the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa (Subclass 494), the primary applicant charge is AUD 6,140, with no separate nomination fee. These charges are reviewed annually and may change again from 1 July each year.
Employer sponsorship and nomination costs
Beyond the visa and nomination charges above, employers sponsoring under the Core Skills or Specialist Skills streams of Subclass 482 must also pay the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy, which ranges from roughly AUD 1,200 to AUD 1,800 per year depending on the sponsoring business's annual turnover and the length of the visa period.
Skills assessment and testing fees
Applicants may need to pay for skills assessments, licensing checks, or qualification verification, where these apply to the nominated occupation.
Legal and professional service fees
Legal fees depend on the complexity of the matter, including setting up employer sponsorship and supporting the visa application itself.
Factors affecting employer visa processing times
Processing times depend on the sponsor's status, the occupation involved, how complete the documentation is, and the Department's current workload.
Typical timelines for Subclass 482, 186, and 494 visas
Processing can range from several weeks to several months, depending on the visa subclass and how complex the case is.
Employer not meeting sponsorship requirements
Applications can be refused where the employer doesn't meet its legal sponsorship obligations or fails a compliance check, including where the offered salary sits below the applicable income threshold or market salary rate.
Incorrect or incomplete documentation
Missing or inconsistent documentation can delay the application or result in refusal.
Failure to meet occupation or skill requirements
Applicants need to clearly meet the skills and experience required for the nominated occupation.
English language or qualification issues
Failing to meet the minimum English standard, or not providing valid qualifications, can lead to refusal.

The Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT), which applies to the Core Skills stream of the Subclass 482 visa and to Subclass 186 nominations, is reviewed annually. Pending verification — see Costs section note below.
Yes, eligible Brisbane businesses can sponsor overseas workers if they meet the Department's requirements.
Sponsored workers are entitled to the same workplace protections as any other employee in Australia, including minimum pay and conditions under the Fair Work Act, and they can only be employed in the occupation and with the sponsor named on their visa.
You may have options to seek review, reapply, or explore an alternative visa pathway, depending on the reasons for refusal.
