Types of Parent Visas Available in Sydney

Parent Visa Pathways for Families Living in Sydney

Bringing parents to live permanently in Australia

A settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen can sponsor a parent for permanent migration, provided strict eligibility rules are met. Generally, the sponsoring child needs to have lived in Australia for at least two years before they're able to sponsor a parent.

Temporary parent visa options while waiting for permanent visas

Some contributory pathways include a temporary visa stage, often called a parent temporary visa, which lets parents remain in Australia while their permanent visa application is being assessed. This gives parents a way to stay in the country through the processing period as they move from temporary to permanent status.

Sponsoring parents while living in Sydney

A sponsor based in Sydney who has lived in Australia for at least two years may be able to support a parent's visa application, as long as sponsorship and financial requirements are met. Each approved sponsor is limited to sponsoring no more than two parents at a time.

Meet With Our Sydney Parent Visa Lawyers

Families exploring a parent visa often want to sit down with someone who can walk through the pathway options face to face. Our Sydney office is set up for exactly that, with in-person consultations available for families who prefer to work through their circumstances directly with a lawyer.

At that first meeting, you will speak with a migration lawyer who sets out the pathway options relevant to your family, including the contributory versus non-contributory choice, and what that choice means for cost and waiting time. Fee arrangements are agreed upfront, so there is clarity on cost before any work begins.

For families who cannot attend in person, the same consultation is available online, with the same level of guidance provided either way.

Parent Visa Eligibility Requirements

Sponsorship by an eligible child in Australia

The applicant needs to be sponsored by a child who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Balance of family test requirements

Applicants need to pass the balance of family test, which looks at how many of their eligible children live in Australia compared with any other country.

Health and character requirements

Every applicant has to meet Australia's health and character standards as part of the assessment.

Assurance of Support obligations

Sponsors are often required to provide an Assurance of Support, which helps ensure applicants won't need to rely on government support.

Documents Required for a Parent Visa Application

Identity and passport documents

Applicants need valid ID documents, including a passport and other personal identification.

Proof of relationship with the sponsoring child

Applicants must provide evidence establishing the parent-child relationship in line with migration requirements.

Evidence to meet the balance of family test

Supporting documentation is needed to show the balance of family test has been satisfied.

Financial documents for Assurance of Support

Sponsors may be asked to provide financial records and formally commit to the Assurance of Support obligations.

Health and character documentation

Applicants typically need to undergo medical exams and provide police clearances to satisfy the visa conditions.

Parent Visa Application Process

1

Consultation and visa eligibility assessment

We start by assessing eligibility in detail, including sponsorship arrangements and which visa pathway makes sense.

2

Preparing the parent visa application and documents

We put together a thorough application, covering all required supporting documents and legal considerations.

3

Lodging the visa application with the Department

We lodge the application with the Department of Home Affairs for assessment.

4

Communication with the Department and ongoing legal support

We stay in contact with the Department throughout, helping respond to requests and manage any delays or complications that arise.

Benefits of Using a Sydney Parent Visa Lawyer

The contributory versus non-contributory decision carries real financial and timing consequences, and it is not always straightforward for families to weigh up on their own. A lawyer can help set out what each pathway means in practice for a specific family, rather than in general terms.

Getting the eligibility and documentation right from the outset also matters, given how long some of these pathways take to resolve. Legal input at the start can help avoid gaps that surface only after years of waiting.

Our Sydney team supports families through the entire parent visa journey, from choosing a pathway through to lodgement and ongoing case management. Contact our Sydney office to talk through your family's situation.

As part of the Assurance of Support requirement, sponsors may need to make certain financial commitments.

Legal and professional service fees

What you pay in legal fees depends on how complicated the case is and how much assistance is needed.

Health checks and documentation costs

Applicants may need to budget for medical exams, police checks, and other supporting paperwork.

Parent Visa Processing Times in Sydney

Factors affecting parent visa processing

How long processing takes depends on the visa type, how many applications are in the system, and individual circumstances.

Typical waiting periods for contributory and non-contributory visas

Contributory pathways tend to move faster than non-contributory ones, which can involve considerably longer waits.

FAQs About Parent Visa Sydney

Cost depends on whether the pathway is contributory or non-contributory, and includes the government charge plus any other obligations that apply.

This varies considerably, and can run anywhere from a few years to much longer depending on which subclass applies.

It's a check on whether at least half of the applicant's children are Australian permanent residents or citizens.

Parents on a permanent visa generally have work rights, while temporary pathways may come with their own conditions.

Depending on the circumstances, there may be limited grounds for review or other visa options worth exploring, and getting legal advice can help identify the right next step.
