An Administrative Review Tribunal appeal is a legal process that lets eligible applicants seek an independent review of certain visa decisions made by the Department of Home Affairs. The Tribunal was established under the Administrative Review Tribunal Act 2024 and replaced the AAT when it came into effect on 14 October 2024. The Tribunal reassesses the facts and law to decide whether the original decision should be upheld or changed.

Administrative Review Tribunal application fees
Applicants are required to pay a filing fee when lodging an appeal, subject to eligibility for any fee reductions. As at 1 July 2026, the standard ART filing fee for most migration reviews is $3,727, with a $2,293 fee for protection matters and a $100 concessional fee available in limited circumstances.

Legal fees vary depending on the complexity of the case and the level of representation required.

Costs may arise for obtaining supporting evidence, translations, and other documentation.
If your ART appeal relates to a refusal or cancellation made while you were in Australia, you may be eligible for a bridging visa during the ART review, letting you remain lawfully in Australia while your case is decided. Whether you're eligible, and which bridging visa applies, depends on your circumstances and the visa decision under review.
Migration and protection matters were handled by the AAT's Migration and Refugee Division before the ART replaced the AAT on 14 October 2024. That named division no longer exists under the ART's current jurisdictional-area and list structure, though the underlying caseload, migration and protection decisions, continues to be handled by the Tribunal in essentially the same way.

The Administrative Review Tribunal opened a full-service Darwin registry at Level 10, NT House, 22 Mitchell Street, Darwin, following a $3.6 million federal funding commitment. Before this, the Northern Territory was the only Australian jurisdiction without its own Tribunal registry, and Territorians' matters were managed out of Adelaide, generally heard virtually by members based in other capital cities. The Darwin office now includes a front counter, registrar and conferencing services, a dedicated hearing room, and Darwin-based members, giving Territorians the same in-person access to Tribunal services available in other states.
