How to check any migration lawyer or agent

Migration advice is a field where scams and bad advice are real risks. These checks apply to anyone you are thinking about.

1

Check they are allowed to practise. Lawyers hold a practising certificate you can check on your state's Law Society or legal regulator register. Registered migration agents are listed on the OMARA register.

2

Ask for a written costs agreement before you pay anything.

3

Read reviews from more than one place, and read the detail, not just the stars.

4

Ask who will actually handle your matter and how you will be kept updated.

Warning signs

  • They guarantee a visa. No lawyer or agent can promise an outcome.
  • They pressure you to pay quickly, or only in cash or cryptocurrency.
  • They will not give you a written agreement or an invoice.
  • They ask you to give false information or leave something out.
  • They cannot show that they are registered or hold a practising certificate.
