Occupations in Demand in Tasmania
Hobart continues to attract skilled professionals across a range of industries. Occupations aligned with healthcare, education, tourism, and trades are often in demand.
State nomination gives applicants who may not meet the threshold for independent migration an additional pathway. For eligible skilled migrants, it offers a more direct route to permanent residency and can lift a points score enough to improve the likelihood of an invitation to apply.
Hobart offers a close-knit community, a growing healthcare and education sector, and a notably high quality of life. It's an increasingly popular destination for skilled migrants seeking a different pace of life alongside long-term career stability.
Many skilled migrants transition from temporary visas onto the PR pathway through structured migration processes, generally depending on ongoing employment in Hobart, residency, and compliance with visa conditions.
There are no hidden costs for our services. Our fees are clearly set out in a fee agreement.
From the first same-day response to the granting of your Australian visa, you'll have direct access to a lawyer.
Our experienced lawyers will give you regular updates and clear explanations of visa pathways.
We offer a client satisfaction guarantee in relation to our visa application services.
3 - 6 months installment options available on some visa types.
Hobart clients can meet directly with a migration lawyer for an in-person consultation at our office.
At your first meeting, we'll walk through your visa options, explain how our services work, and set out the process ahead. Ongoing work is quoted as a fixed, upfront fee with several payment options available, so you have a clear, structured plan before committing.
For clients who can't attend in person, we also offer online consultations for the same level of support.

Passport and identity documents
Applicants need valid identification documents to establish identity and citizenship.
Skills assessment documents
Evidence of a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority is required.
Employment and work experience evidence
Documentation supporting your employment history, including references and contracts, is essential. If claiming skilled employment, defined as work classified at skill levels 1, 2, or 3 under the ANZSCO classification system, you need to provide evidence of this. Educational qualifications and transcripts
Academic records are needed to demonstrate your qualifications and support your skills assessment.
The process typically begins with a detailed assessment of your eligibility, covering points, occupation, and visa options.
Applicants need to obtain a positive skills assessment and submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.
If invited to apply, applicants can proceed to lodge a visa application supported by comprehensive documentation.
Communication with the Department is critical throughout the process, and ongoing legal support can help address any requests or issues that arise.
Engaging a skilled migration lawyer helps make sure your application is prepared in line with current migration law and policy. Legal guidance can identify potential risks, strengthen supporting evidence, and present your case clearly to decision-makers.
Professional assistance can also reduce delays by keeping applications decision-ready and compliant with Departmental requirements.

The Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) visa is $6,140. These charges are set by the Department of Home Affairs and are reviewed annually.
State nomination fees
Tasmania's nomination application, submitted through Migration Tasmania alongside the federal visa application, carries its own separate fee on top of the Department of Home Affairs charge above.

Fees may apply for obtaining a skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority.

While indicative processing times are published by the Department, actual timelines may differ based on individual circumstances and application volumes.
Insufficient points to meet migration requirements
An application can be refused if the required points threshold isn't met at the time of invitation.
Incorrect or incomplete documentation
Failing to provide accurate and complete documentation can result in refusal.
Negative skills assessment outcome
An unfavourable skills assessment can affect eligibility for the visa; a refused assessment may itself be open to review with the relevant assessing authority.
Failure to meet English language requirements
Applicants need to meet the required English language standard to qualify.

Hobart is Australia's second-oldest capital city, founded in 1804 as a British penal colony on the banks of the Derwent River. The Palawa people are the traditional custodians of the land, and their presence in Tasmania dates back at least 35,000 years. European settlement brought convicts primarily from England, Ireland, and Scotland, and the cessation of transportation in 1853 marked the beginning of Hobart's transition toward a free settler society. The post-World War II era brought migrants from Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia, and Poland to Hobart, gradually diversifying a city that had remained predominantly Anglo-Celtic throughout its early history. In more recent decades, Hobart has welcomed humanitarian entrants and skilled migrants from China, India, Bhutan, Nepal, and across Southeast Asia. Today, Hobart retains the highest proportion of Australian-born residents among Australia's capital cities, but its migrant community continues to grow steadily, enriching the city's cultural fabric and contributing to its ongoing economic recovery and growth.
