Skilled Work Visa Cost & Fees

While the obvious fee associated with a skilled work visa is the cost of the visa itself, there may also be fees associated with secondary applicants, as well as other costs generally associated with the visa process, including skills assessments, health examinations, and legal representation. These expenses can significantly contribute to the overall cost of a visa application.

The Department of Home Affairs publishes a formal fee schedule, which is updated annually and forms the baseline for visa application charges. Depending on whether an applicant applies through a points-tested pathway or an employer-sponsored stream, the applicable fees and employer levies differ significantly.

Keeping track of each fee associated with a skilled work visa can sometimes seem overwhelming. There are a variety of costs, including those set by the visa regulations themselves as well as third-party expenses that can accumulate throughout the visa process. By creating a realistic budget of the process at large helps both applicants and sponsoring businesses avoid unexpected financial burdens.

At Australian Migration Lawyers, we ensure that all of our clients are informed at every step of the process and can budget for their visa journey with confidence.

Government Visa Application Charges

The visa application charge (VAC) depends on the subclass, stream and number of applicants. Points-tested options include the Skilled Independent (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491) visas. Check the current Department of Home Affairs pricing estimator before lodging.

Employer-sponsored options include the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) and Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visas. Sponsorship, nomination and SAF levy costs can apply separately. Sponsors must bear costs that the law prohibits them from recovering from visa applicants.

Note that figures in this table are indicative only. Confirm the applicable charges and any concessions using the Department of Home Affairs Visa Pricing Estimator before lodging.

Visa Subclass & Stream Primary Applicant VAC Additional Applicant (18+) Additional Applicant (Under 18) Employer Nomination Fee Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) Levy

Change to Surcharges Effective 1 October 2026

The Department of Home Affairs has applied a payment surcharge (varying by credit card, debit card, or PayPal) at the point of payment. Card surcharges in Australia are changing under Reserve Bank of Australia reforms from 1 October 2026, so the surcharge that applies to your payment should be confirmed on the Department of Home Affairs website before you pay. For international applicants, currency conversion rates and banking transfer fees can add noticeable costs.

What Are the Additional Costs Beyond Government Charges?

Other possible costs depend on the pathway and the applicant’s circumstances:

Skills Assessments: Assessing authorities set their own fees for evaluating qualifications and experience. Check the relevant authority’s current schedule.

Health Examinations: If required, the cost depends on the examinations and the provider.

Police Certificates: Applicants may need to obtain an Australian police check and police certificates or other penal clearances from countries in which they have lived for specified periods. Local processing fees apply and vary between countries and authorities.

Document Translations: Non-English documents need English translations. For translations completed in Australia, include the translator’s NAATI practitioner number; overseas translations have different identification requirements.

Migration Lawyer Fees: Legal fees may cover eligibility advice, document review, application preparation and, if separately engaged, review work.

Who Pays What?

Australian migration rules allocate certain costs to the sponsor in employer-sponsored pathways.

Government charges

  • The visa application charge is generally paid when lodging.
  • Employers must meet applicable sponsorship and nomination costs, including the SAF levy where required.
  • Sponsors cannot recover prohibited costs from the visa applicant.

Other expenses

English tests, skills assessments, examinations, translations and legal services vary with the pathway and provider.

Ask who is responsible for each item before proceeding.

Common Mistakes in Budgeting for a Skilled Visa

Applicants can experience financial strain when they do not budget for the full range of costs involved in the migration process. Understanding potential additional expenses can help applicants avoid financial surprises and, where applicable, delays in preparing an application.

Common mistakes include:

Underestimating total family charges

Adding secondary applicants, such as a partner or dependent children, can substantially increase the baseline VAC, as well as other variable expenses such as health examination fees and police checks.

Forgetting a possible second installment

In some subclasses, an additional charge may apply to an adult secondary applicant who does not meet the functional English requirement. Check the specific visa’s rules.

Miscalculating skills assessment timelines and retake costs

Applicants may overlook the possibility of repeating a skills assessment or paying for translations and other documents. Check the payment surcharge update above when calculating the final government payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally, visa application charges paid to the Department of Home Affairs are non-refundable once an application has been submitted, regardless of whether the application is ultimately granted, refused, or withdrawn. Refunds may be available in limited circumstances prescribed by the relevant legislation and regulations.

No. Employers sponsoring or nominating visa applicants under relevant employer-sponsored visa programs, including the Skills in Demand (subclass 482) and Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) programs, must meet the costs that Australian migration law requires them to bear. This includes applicable nomination fees and the SAF levy. These costs cannot be recovered from the visa applicant where doing so is prohibited by law.

A second visa application charge instalment can apply to an adult secondary applicant who does not meet the relevant functional English requirement for a particular visa. Check the subclass rules and current amount; if payable, it is generally due before grant.

Charges can change, often on 1 July of each year. Check the Department of Home Affairs’s current fee schedule or pricing estimator before lodging.
