2026 Telstra Best of Business Awards Nominee

Often, skilled work visas provide the rights for applicants to live, work and establish careers in Australia, and as a result, uncertainty in processing time can be stressful and uncomfortable. While it is understandable that many applicants want to know exact timeframes for their visa processing time, the reality is that it depends on variables often outside of the applicants control, and depend heavily on the specific subclass, stream, and individual applicant circumstances.
However, by navigating the visa process with careful preparation, any additional delays or issues can be avoided, which puts applicants in the best position to hear back from the Department of Home Affairs as soon as practicable. Whether you are seeking permanent residency through a points-tested pathway or being sponsored by an employer, realistic expectations and decision-ready applications are key to avoiding unnecessary delays.

The Department of Home Affairs publishes indicative processing times for many skilled visa streams, based on recently decided applications. These figures change and do not predict when an individual application will be decided.
For points-tested pathways, the time spent waiting for an invitation or state or territory nomination is separate from the Department’s visa processing time. Employer-sponsored pathways may also involve a sponsorship or nomination application before the visa can be decided.
| Visa Subclass & Pathway | Key Pathway Focus | Processing Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa | Points-tested independent permanent residency | Dependent on Invitation Rounds by Department of Home Affairs |
| Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa | State or Territory nominated permanent residency | Requires State Nomination before visa application |
| Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa | State or Family sponsored regional provisional visa | Subject to regional quotas and invitation rounds |
| Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa | Employer-sponsored temporary pathway | Sponsorship and nomination requirements may affect the pathway |
| Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa | Employer-sponsored permanent residency | Direct Entry and Temporary Residence Transition streams vary |
Several critical factors influence how long a skilled visa application takes to reach a final determination:
Application Completeness: Providing accurate forms and relevant supporting documents can reduce requests for further information, although a complete application does not guarantee faster processing.
Points Claims: Discrepancies in claimed work experience, qualifications or English proficiency may require clarification or verification.
Character and Health Clearances: Delays in obtaining foreign police certificates or undergoing complex health evaluations can significantly extend processing times.
Pathway Requirements: Employer-sponsored applications may involve sponsorship and nomination steps as well as the visa application. The requirements differ by subclass and stream.
Department Caseload and Priorities: Application volumes and any applicable processing priorities can affect timing.

The steps vary by pathway, but a visa application may involve:
A valid application and supporting documents are submitted, usually through ImmiAccount. Applicants in Australia may be granted a bridging visa depending on their circumstances; lodgement does not automatically grant one.
A case officer evaluates the claims, verifies documents, and conducts background or employment checks.
The Department may ask for additional documents or clarification if required.
The Department of Home Affairs grants the visa or issues a notification of refusal.
Applicants can reduce some avoidable delays by checking the requirements and keeping information consistent:
Failing to attach mandatory identity, skill, or employment evidence at the time of lodgement.
Discrepancies in personal history, travel records, or work details across forms.
An incomplete or late response to a request for further information can delay a decision or affect the outcome. Such a request does not automatically pause a statutory processing clock.
References, payslips and other records should support the work experience and duties claimed under the applicable visa requirements.

There is no fixed approval period. The Department’s visa processing times guide provides indicative figures for recently decided applications in available subclasses and streams. Time waiting for an invitation or nomination may be additional.
A complete and accurate application may avoid preventable requests. Priority processing depends on the applicable Departmental settings and cannot generally be secured simply by asking or paying an extra fee.
For points-tested visas, an expression of interest and any required invitation or state or territory nomination come before lodgement of the visa application. Time waiting at those stages is separate from the Department’s published visa processing times.
If the Department requests more information under section 56, read the request carefully and respond by the stated deadline. The Department may continue assessing the application; the request does not automatically stop processing.
