For Australian citizens or permanent residents, parent visas create a pathway for them to bring their parents to Australia, either on a temporary or permanent visa. There are several pathways available, each with different eligibility requirements and financial commitments.
At Australian Migration Lawyers, we regularly advise clients on how to structure parent visa pathways effectively. Parent visas can be costly, so understanding the financial parameters early allows families to plan appropriately and make the best decision for their situation, while avoiding critical lodgement errors.
This guide has been prepared by our team to provide insight into the government charges, processing timelines, and underlying third-party expenses that we believe applicants should know before embarking on a journey towards bringing parents to Australia.

The Department of Home Affairs imposes specific charges for parent visas, structured across different subclasses, applicant categories, and payment stages. Parent visa options fall primarily into non-contributory permanent streams, contributory permanent streams, and temporary sponsored streams.
Contributory permanent visas have much larger second instalments than non-contributory visas. All permanent parent visa subclasses discussed here are subject to queues, and the waiting time can be substantial.
| Visa subclass | Visa category | Main applicant, first instalment | Additional adult, first instalment | Additional child, first instalment | Second instalment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 103 Parent | Non-contributory permanent | $6,600 | $3,300 | $1,655 | $2,065 per applicant |
| 804 Aged Parent | Non-contributory permanent (onshore) | $6,600 | $3,300 | $1,655 | $2,065 per applicant |
| 143 Contributory Parent | Contributory permanent | $6,300 | $2,125 | $1,065 | $43,600 per adult; child rate may differ |
| 864 Contributory Aged Parent | Contributory permanent (onshore) | $6,300 | $3,145 | $1,580 | $43,600 per adult; child rate may differ |
| 870 Sponsored Parent (up to 3 years) | Temporary; each parent applies separately | $1,515 | Not applicable | Not applicable | $4,855 (total visa charge $6,370) |
| 870 Sponsored Parent (up to 5 years) | Temporary; each parent applies separately | $1,515 + $420 Application fee | Not applicable | Not applicable | $10,925 (total visa charge $12,440) |
Note that figures in this table are indicative only. Please use the Department of Home Affairs Visa Pricing Estimator to confirm the charges that may apply in your case, and any concession you may be entitled to prior to submitting your application. The fees listed in this table represent the typical standard charges which were available on 30 September 2026 for applications made directly through the Department of Home Affairs. Charges will vary depending on the individual's circumstances.
For example, eligible citizens of a number of countries in the Pacific Islands and Timor-Leste may receive concessions or reduced charges. In addition, there are staged contributory pathways where concessions or reduced charges may be available. Please check your eligibility against the current Visa Pricing Table prior to making payment.
Permanent parent visas generally require an Assurance of Support (AoS). For an individual assurer, the bank guarantee is $5,000 for one adult or $7,000 for two adults under a four-year AoS (non-contributory visas), and $10,000 for one adult or $14,000 for two adults under a ten-year AoS (contributory visas). The deposit is released after the AoS period subject to any recoverable income-support debt; Services Australia will advise when to arrange it.

Other expenses vary with the applicants’ circumstances and the evidence requested:
Health examinations, if required, with an approved panel physician or clinic.
Police certificates from countries where an applicant has spent a cumulative 12 months or more in the past 10 years, subject to the Department’s age and case-specific instructions.
English translations of non-English documents. An Australian translator should provide a NAATI practitioner number; an overseas translator should provide their contact details and qualifications.
Legal representation fees for advice and managing lodgement processes.
Understanding parent visa cost in Australia requires distinguishing between statutory non-negotiable fees and variable expenses.
Government visa charges and any required AoS bank guarantee should be budgeted separately. The guarantee is security that may be released after the AoS period, subject to recoverable debts; it is not another visa fee.
Medical examinations, translations, police certificates, travel, health insurance where relevant, and professional advice are variable expenses. Legal advice can help identify eligibility and documentation issues, but cannot guarantee a visa outcome or a shorter queue.
Common budgeting errors include overlooking second instalments for each eligible family member, treating the AoS guarantee as a visa fee, omitting the separate subclass 870 sponsor application, or allowing for only one set of health or police checks despite a lengthy queue.
Families considering a temporary visa while waiting, or an onshore aged parent application, should check visa conditions, eligibility and the effect on any other application before committing to a pathway.

For one applicant, the standard government visa charge is $8,665 for a subclass 103 or 804, and $49,900 for a direct subclass 143 or 864 application, each paid in two instalments. Additional applicants, an AoS bank guarantee and other expenses increase the family’s outlay. The subclass 870 temporary visa totals $6,370 for up to three years or $12,440 for up to five years per parent, plus a separate $420 sponsor application fee.
For a contributory parent visa, an eligible assurer normally provides an AoS and a bank guarantee. An individual assurer’s guarantee is $10,000 for one adult or $14,000 for two adults, held for the ten-year AoS period. Services Australia may recover certain income-support payments from the guarantee. It is generally released after the period ends if no recoverable debt remains.
The second instalment of $43,600 per adult applicant is requested by the Department of Home Affairs towards the end of processing, shortly before the visa is formally granted.
No, migration lawyer fees are separate professional fees for legal advice and application management. Department charges cover visa processing fees paid directly to the government.
