For Australian citizens or permanent residents, parent visas create a pathway for them to bring their parents to Australia, either on a temporary or permanent visa. There are several pathways available, each with different eligibility requirements and financial commitments.
At Australian Migration Lawyers, we regularly advise clients on how to structure parent visa pathways effectively. A key factor in knowing which pathway may be right for your family is processing times. Depending on whether an applicant applies under a non-contributory stream or a contributory stream, waiting periods vary significantly. We provide strategic legal guidance to ensure your family's application is thoroughly prepared, compliant, and positioned to avoid unnecessary administrative delays.

The annual cap set by the Australian Government limits how many permanent parent visas can be granted in a migration program year. It does not close applications when the cap is reached, remaining valid applications stay in the queue until a place becomes available in a future year.
The Department currently estimates about 33 years for a new Parent or Aged Parent application (subclasses 103 and 804) and about 15 years for a new Contributory Parent application (including subclasses 143 and 864). These are broad estimates based on places available each year, not a promise for an individual application. The temporary Sponsored Parent visa (subclass 870) is assessed separately and does not give permanent residence.
| Visa stream and subclass | Stream | Current processing overview |
|---|---|---|
| 103 Parent | Non-contributory permanent | About 33 years estimated for a new Parent/Aged Parent application; capped and queued |
| 804 Aged Parent | Non-contributory permanent | About 33 years estimated for a new Parent/Aged Parent application; capped and queued |
| 143 Contributory Parent | Contributory permanent | About 15 years estimated for a new contributory application; capped and queued |
| 864 Contributory Aged Parent | Contributory permanent | About 15 years estimated for a new contributory application; capped and queued |
| 870 Sponsored Parent | Temporary | Separate processing-time guide; no permanent-residence pathway under this visa |

The queue and available places drive the overall wait for permanent parent visas. Individual factors can affect initial assessment and finalisation once a place is available:
Application Completeness: Missing evidence or incorrect information can prompt further requests and delay the initial or final assessment.
Balance of family test: Most permanent parent applicants must show that at least half their children and stepchildren are eligible children in Australia, or that more are eligible children in Australia than in any other single country. Some retiree-pathway applicants are exempt. Complex family histories can require more evidence.
Health and character requirements: Required examinations and checks, or a complex health assessment, may add time. The Department may request updated evidence during a long queue.
Subclass and location: Onshore aged parent subclasses have age, visa-status and bridging-visa considerations that differ from offshore subclasses.
Places and priorities: Migration program places, application volumes and processing directions influence how quickly queues advance.
The Department generally undertakes an initial assessment, assigns a queue date to an application that meets core criteria, and later releases queued applications for final processing as places become available.
The Department receives a valid application and generally acknowledges it. Keep the application reference and contact details current.
The Department assesses core criteria in lodgement date order. It assigns a queue date and advises the applicant in writing if those criteria are met; the queue date is not necessarily the lodgement date.
When a place becomes available, the Department releases applications in queue date order and completes remaining checks. It may request an Assurance of Support and a second visa charge where applicable before grant.
Errors during application preparation can stall progress or result in formal requests for further information, extending processing times unnecessarily.
Missing identity or relationship evidence can lead to requests for more information and delay assessment.
Read any request carefully and respond by its stated deadline. Missing or late material can delay a decision or lead to a decision on the information available.
Omitting or inaccurately describing stepchildren, adopted children or children whose location is unknown can require further investigation.
Health examinations and police certificates may need to be refreshed after a long wait. Follow the Department’s timing instructions.

The Department’s current estimate for a new application is about 33 years for a Parent or Aged Parent visa and 15 years for a Contributory Parent visa. These estimates can change and do not predict an individual outcome. Subclass 870 is a separate temporary visa and it is often processed within months.
An eligible onshore aged parent application may be associated with a bridging visa, depending on the applicant’s circumstances and the validity of the application. A parent awaiting an offshore application may visit Australia only if they hold a suitable visa and comply with its conditions; lodging a permanent parent application alone does not grant entry or a right to stay.
Contributory parent visas have much higher government charges and a shorter estimated queue than non-contributory Parent and Aged Parent visas. Both permanent streams are capped and queued, and actual waiting periods may change.
A complete application and prompt responses can help avoid avoidable assessment delays. They do not move an application ahead of its queue date or override the annual grant cap. Check the Department’s Parent visas queue page for the latest milestones.
