Employers need to show their business is legally operating, financially viable, and has a genuine need for overseas workers in the nominated roles.
Before sponsoring workers, most businesses need to obtain standard business sponsor approval from the Department of Home Affairs.
Sponsors need to meet ongoing sponsor obligations set by the Department of Home Affairs, including proper employment conditions, record keeping, and only employing visa holders in approved roles. Depending on the occupation and stream, employers may also need to provide labour market testing evidence showing the role was genuinely advertised to Australian workers first.
South Australian employers can access global talent where local recruitment hasn't met workforce demand, subject to sponsorship approval.

Government visa application fees
As of 1 July 2026, the Skills in Demand (482) visa costs $4,015 for the base application fee plus a $330 nomination fee. The Employer Nomination Scheme (186) costs $6,140 base plus a $540 nomination fee. The Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (494) visa costs $6,140, with no separate nomination fee.
TSMIT and income threshold requirements
Sponsored workers generally need to be paid at or above the relevant income threshold. The Core Skills stream of the 482 and the 186 use the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT), currently $79,423, while the Specialist Skills stream of the 482 uses the higher Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT), currently $146,576. The Subclass 494 also uses the TSMIT. These thresholds are indexed and reviewed periodically, so it's worth confirming the current figure before relying on it.
Employer sponsorship and nomination costs
Employers can incur costs tied to sponsorship approval and nomination applications, including the Skilling Australia Fund (SAF) levy, which runs from roughly $1,200 to $1,800 a year depending on business turnover.
Skills assessment and testing fees
Applicants may need to pay for skills assessments, licensing checks, or qualification verification.
Legal and professional service fees
Legal fees depend on how complex the matter is, including setting up employer sponsorship and supporting the visa application itself.
Factors affecting employer visa processing times
Processing times depend on the employer's sponsorship status, the occupation type, how complete the documentation is, and Departmental workload.
Typical timelines for Subclass 482, 186, and 494 visas
Processing can range from a few weeks to several months depending on the visa subclass, the SID stream, and how complex the case is. The Specialist Skills stream is generally processed much faster than the Core Skills stream, given its higher income threshold and lighter documentary requirements.
Employer not meeting sponsorship requirements
An application can be refused if the employer doesn't meet its legal sponsorship obligations or fails a compliance check.
Incorrect or incomplete documentation
Missing or inconsistent documentation can delay or result in refusal.
Failure to meet occupation or skill requirements
Applicants need to clearly meet the skills and experience required for the nominated occupation.
English language or qualification issues
Not meeting the minimum English standard or failing to provide valid qualifications can result in refusal.
