Más informaciónThe Skills in Demand visa Subclass 482 enables Australian employers to bring in overseas skilled workers when the required skills are difficult or impossible to find in the local market, and the Specialist Skills stream is designed for highly skilled workers who satisfy the specific occupational and salary requirements for sponsorship under this stream. Unlike the Core Skills stream, which relies on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), there is no single occupation list for the Specialist Skills stream; instead, the Department of Home Affairs considers a nominated occupation eligible if it falls within one of the specified ANZSCO major groups and meets the applicable salary and other visa requirements.

This framework applies to the Specialist Skills stream of the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa. The stream is designed for eligible highly skilled workers whose nominated positions meet the relevant occupational and income requirements.
While the Core Skills stream relies on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), the Specialist Skills stream uses a broader occupational framework. Applicants and employers considering whether a role qualifies under the specialist skills occupations list should instead assess the nominated position against the relevant Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) requirements and the applicable income threshold.
Determining eligibility under the Specialist Skills stream differs from visa pathways that rely on a specific occupation list. Rather than looking for an individual job title on a prescribed list, employers and applicants must determine whether the nominated occupation falls within an eligible ANZSCO major group and whether the other requirements of the stream are satisfied.
Eligibility for the Specialist Skills stream is determined by assessing the nominated occupation against the relevant ANZSCO code and ensuring that the position falls within an eligible major occupational group. The applicant must also satisfy the applicable Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT).
Under the relevant requirements, eligible positions may fall within ANZSCO Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6. These groups include:
Major Group 1: Managers
Major Group 2: Professionals
Major Group 4: Community and Personal Service Workers
Major Group 5: Clerical and Administrative Workers
Major Group 6: Sales Workers
Positions classified under ANZSCO Major Groups 3 (Technicians and Trades Workers), 7 (Machinery Operators and Drivers) and 8 (Labourers) are excluded from the Specialist Skills stream, regardless of the proposed salary.
Another key feature of the stream is that eligibility does not depend on being included on the Core Skills Occupation List. However, the nominated salary must meet or exceed the applicable Specialist Skills Income Threshold, while also satisfying the Annual Market Salary Rate requirements for the position.
If you are assessing whether a position may qualify, identifying the appropriate ANZSCO code and checking the proposed remuneration against the applicable income threshold are important first steps in determining whether the role may be eligible for the Specialist Skills stream.
Although there is no traditional specialist skills occupation list, the table below outlines the relevant ANZSCO major groups, their eligibility status and key considerations for the Specialist Skills stream.
| ANZSCO Major Group | Category Name | Stream Eligibility Status | Key Requirements & Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Major Group 1 | Managers | Eligible | Must satisfy the applicable Specialist Skills Income Threshold and Annual Market Salary Rate requirements. |
| Major Group 2 | Professionals | Eligible | Includes a broad range of professional occupations, subject to the relevant requirements. |
| Major Group 4 | Community and Personal Service Workers | Eligible | The nominated occupation must satisfy the applicable stream requirements. |
| Major Group 5 | Clerical and Administrative Workers | Eligible | The nominated occupation and position must meet the relevant requirements, including the applicable salary threshold. |
| Major Group 6 | Sales Workers | Eligible | The nominated occupation must satisfy the applicable occupational and salary requirements. |
| Major Group 3 | Technicians and Trades Workers | Excluded | Not eligible for the Specialist Skills stream. Other visa pathways may be available depending on the occupation and circumstances. |
| Major Group 7 | Machinery Operators and Drivers | Excluded | Not eligible for the Specialist Skills stream. |
| Major Group 8 | Labourers | Excluded | Not eligible for the Specialist Skills stream. |
When reviewing specialist skills stream occupations, it is important to remember that falling within an eligible ANZSCO major group is only one part of the assessment. Employers must also consider the nominated position, proposed remuneration, Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR) and the applicant's skills and experience, as well as the other requirements that apply to the visa and nomination.
Navigating employer-sponsored visa pathways requires careful assessment of both the nomination and visa requirements. At Australian Migration Lawyers, we assist employers and skilled workers in assessing whether the Specialist Skills stream may be suitable for their circumstances.
Australian Migration Lawyers will assist you with determining which ANZSCO code applies to your occupation, examining the salary proposed, and evaluating if the position being offered meets all the required criteria. In addition, we can assist with drafting the sponsorship application and the visa application as well as identifying any issues prior to submitting either application. No. The Specialist Skills stream does not use a traditional occupation list containing a fixed set of eligible job titles. Instead, eligibility is determined in part by whether the nominated occupation falls within an eligible ANZSCO major group and whether the applicant and employer satisfy the applicable salary and other requirements.
No. Occupations falling within ANZSCO Major Group 3, as well as Major Groups 7 and 8, are excluded from the Specialist Skills stream. A high salary does not override the occupational requirements. Depending on the occupation and circumstances, other pathways, such as the Core Skills stream or a Labour Agreement, may need to be considered.
The first step is to identify the ANZSCO code that most accurately reflects the duties and responsibilities of the nominated position. You then need to determine whether the occupation falls within an eligible major group and whether the proposed remuneration meets the Specialist Skills Income Threshold and Annual Market Salary Rate requirements. Other visa and nomination criteria must also be satisfied.
A formal skills assessment is not generally a standard requirement for every applicant under the Specialist Skills stream. However, the applicant must have the skills and experience required for the nominated position, and additional requirements may apply to particular occupations, registrations or licences. The circumstances of the applicant and nominated position should therefore be assessed before determining whether a skills assessment is required.
