Australian citizenship is the legal status that gives someone full rights and responsibilities as a member of Australia. It lets you live in Australia permanently without visa conditions, vote in federal and state elections, apply for an Australian passport, and access certain government benefits. Citizenship also represents a formal commitment to Australian laws, values, and community participation.

We provide tailored advice to assess whether you meet the legal requirements for Australian citizenship, including permanent residency status, residency compliance, and travel history. This helps confirm eligibility before you submit your application and reduces the risk of refusal due to technical or eligibility issues.
We help prepare and carefully review citizenship applications through your IMMI account, making sure all information is accurate, complete, and consistent with Department of Home Affairs records. This includes checking identity documents, residency calculations, and supporting evidence before lodgement to minimise delays or complications.
We help applicants dealing with more complex circumstances, such as gaps in residency, extended overseas travel, visa changes, or uncertainty around lawful residence periods. We assess how these issues affect eligibility and advise on how to properly address them in your application.
If your citizenship application is refused, we review the decision in detail and advise on your options, including help with a citizenship refusal appeal to the Administrative Review Tribunal where review rights are available.

Permanent residency requirements
Residency requirements for citizenship
Good character requirement
English language and citizenship test requirements
Passport and identification documents
You need to provide valid identity documents, such as passports, birth certificates, and photo identification, to confirm your identity and background.
Evidence of permanent residency
This includes your permanent visa grant notice and official records confirming your permanent residency status in Australia.
Residency and travel history
A complete travel history is needed to verify your compliance with residency requirements, including time spent outside Australia.
Character and supporting documents
Depending on your circumstances, you may need police checks, court records, or statutory declarations addressing character or background matters.
We assess your eligibility and identify any risks or issues before you proceed with your application.
We help prepare and review your application, making sure all information and supporting documents are complete and accurate.
We make sure your application is properly submitted through your IMMI account, with all required documentation, to avoid delays or requests for further information.
If required, you'll complete a citizenship test and may attend an interview with the Department. We help you understand the process and prepare effectively.
Once approved, you attend a citizenship ceremony, sometimes called the pledge of commitment ceremony, where you make the Australian Citizenship Pledge and officially become an Australian citizen.
The test checks your understanding of Australian values, history, government, and civic responsibilities. It's generally computer-based with multiple-choice questions.
Some applicants don't need to sit the standard test, including those under 18, those aged 60 or over, and those with a permanent physical or mental incapacity that prevents them from sitting it, subject to supporting medical evidence and Departmental approval. It's worth confirming whether an exemption applies to your circumstances before assuming you'll need to sit the test.
We guide you on study materials and key topics covered in the test to help you prepare with confidence.
After passing the test, your application moves to final processing before you're invited to attend your citizenship ceremony.
Government citizenship application fees
As of 1 July 2026, the standard citizenship by conferral application (Form 1300T) costs $595, with a concession rate of $85 for eligible applicants, and no fee for a child aged 15 or under included on a parent's form. Citizenship by descent (Form 118) costs $380, plus $160 for each additional sibling applying at the same time. Resuming citizenship (Form 132) costs $255, and evidence of citizenship (Form 119) costs $290.
Legal and professional service fees
Legal costs depend on how complex your application is and whether there are issues such as residency concerns or prior visa complications.
Additional document preparation costs
These can include police certificates, document translations, identity verification, and travel history records.
Typical processing times for citizenship applications
Citizenship processing time varies depending on case complexity, but generally ranges from several months to over a year.
Factors affecting processing delays
Delays can happen because of incomplete applications, additional document requests, identity verification checks, or character assessments.
Failure to meet residency requirements
An application can be refused if the applicant doesn't meet the required residency periods or lawful presence requirements.
Character concerns or legal issues
Serious or unresolved character issues, including criminal history, can result in refusal under citizenship law.
Incorrect or incomplete documentation
Missing or inconsistent documents can lead to delays or refusal.
Citizenship test issues
Failing to pass the citizenship test or demonstrate the required knowledge of Australia can affect approval.
Australian citizenship provides permanent legal status in Australia without visa conditions. It lets you vote, apply for an Australian passport, access government services, and fully take part in civic life. Citizenship also provides long-term security, since you can't lose your right to remain in Australia because of visa cancellation or expiry. Australia generally allows dual citizenship, so most people don't need to give up their existing citizenship to become an Australian citizen, though it's worth checking the rules of your other country of citizenship as well, since not every country permits it.
We provide clear, structured guidance throughout the citizenship process, from eligibility assessment through to final approval. Our approach focuses on accuracy, compliance, and careful preparation to minimise delays and reduce the risk of refusal. We assist with both simple and complex applications, with tailored legal support based on your circumstances.
