Occupation Overview for Carpenter in Australia

What Does a Carpenter Do?

A Carpenter constructs, erects, installs, renovates and repairs structures and fixtures made of wood, plywood, wallboard and other materials. Carpenters typically work on construction sites, fitting and shaping timber and other framing materials to build structures that comply with Australian building standards.

ANZSCO 分類

Carpenter is classified under the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) code 331212, within the Carpenters and Joiners unit group. This classification is distinct from the related occupation of Carpenter and Joiner, which combines site-based carpentry with workshop joinery and cabinetmaking. Applicants should ensure they are assessed against the correct code, as this affects both the skills assessment pathway and visa eligibility.

Typical Duties

Carpenters working under ANZSCO 331212 generally perform duties including:

  • Studying drawings and specifications to determine materials, dimensions and installation procedures
  • Constructing and erecting timber-framed and steel-framed structures for residential and commercial buildings
  • Installing roof trusses, wall frames, flooring systems and structural members
  • Constructing formwork for concrete slabs, footings and other structural elements
  • Fitting windows, doors, skirting boards and architraves
  • Reading and interpreting building plans and engineering drawings in line with the National Construction Code

Skills Assessment for Trades Recognition Australia (TRA)

  1. 為何需要進行 TRA 評估

Trades Recognition Australia is the designated skills assessing authority for Carpenter (ANZSCO 331212). A positive TRA skills assessment confirms that an applicant’s overseas qualifications and work experience are comparable to the Australian Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) and is a mandatory requirement for skilled and employer-sponsored visa pathways.

  2. TRA 評估途徑

TRA offers several assessment pathways depending on an applicant’s qualifications, country of passport and visa pathway, including the Offshore Skills Assessment Program and, for eligible occupation and country combinations, the Migration Skills Assessment. Between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2026, TRA has been streamlining and prioritising assessments for a number of construction occupations, including carpentry, to support Australia’s housing construction targets. This has, for eligible applicants with a relevant qualification, removed the mandatory offshore assessment step in favour of the Migration Skills Assessment, a simpler in-house process. Applicants should confirm their current eligibility for this streamlined pathway, as arrangements are time-limited and subject to review.

Where a streamlined pathway does not apply, TRA may also require a practical trade assessment to confirm hands-on carpentry competency.

  3. Evidence Required

A TRA application is generally supported by trade qualification documents, academic transcripts, detailed employment reference letters describing site-based carpentry duties, and certified translations of any non-English documents. The strength of employment reference letters, in particular, often determines the outcome of an assessment, and our migration lawyers can review this evidence before it is submitted.

Licensing & Registration Requirements

State/Territory Licensing for Carpenters

Carpenters employed directly by an Australian building company generally do not require an individual trade licence to carry out carpentry work as an employee. However, carpenters intending to operate as contractors or subcontractors are typically required to hold a licence or registration once the value of the work they undertake exceeds a threshold set by the relevant state or territory regulator. This applies, for example, through NSW Fair Trading in New South Wales, the Victorian Building Authority in Victoria, and the Queensland Building and Construction Commission in Queensland, with other states and territories operating comparable schemes through their own building or consumer affairs regulators.

Licensing categories, qualification requirements and monetary thresholds are set and periodically revised by each state and territory regulator. Our migration lawyers can direct carpenters to the correct licensing pathway for their intended state of work as part of a broader visa and settlement strategy.

Visa Options for Carpenters

獨立技術簽證(189 子類)

Carpenter (ANZSCO 331212) is included on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, meaning the Subclass 189 visa, a permanent, points-tested visa requiring no state nomination or employer sponsorship, is a potential pathway for eligible applicants who meet the points test and other criteria.

技術提名簽證(子類別 190)

The Subclass 190 visa is a permanent, points-tested visa requiring nomination by a state or territory government. Nomination adds bonus points and is often subject to that state’s current occupation demand lists, which can change independently of the national occupation lists.

技術工作區域簽證(子類別 491)

The Subclass 491 visa is a provisional visa for points-tested applicants nominated by a state or territory, or sponsored by an eligible family member, to live and work in a designated regional area of Australia. It provides a pathway to permanent residence through the Subclass 191 visa after a qualifying period.

Temporary & Other Visas

Depending on individual circumstances, other visa options, including bridging visas or Designated Area Migration Agreements in some regions, may also be relevant to carpenters at different stages of their migration journey. Our migration lawyers can assess which combination of pathways best suits your circumstances.

Eligibility Requirements Under Australian Migration Law

Points-tested and employer-sponsored pathways for carpenters require a positive TRA skills assessment, evidencing qualifications and work experience equivalent to the Australian Certificate III in Carpentry standard.

Points-tested visas, including the Subclass 189, 190 and 491, require applicants to meet a minimum points test score set by the Department of Home Affairs. Points are drawn from factors including age, English language ability, skilled employment experience, and, where applicable, state or territory nomination or regional sponsorship. The points test is competitive, and the score required to receive an invitation can vary between invitation rounds. Applicants can view the official points test criteria and use the Department’s own points calculator through SkillSelect, the Department of Home Affairs’ skilled migration portal. Because individual circumstances affect points differently, our migration lawyers at Australian Migration Lawyers can help you work through your points position and what it means for your visa strategy, so contact us for tailored advice rather than relying on a general points estimate.

Points-tested skilled visas generally require a minimum standard of English language ability, demonstrated through an approved English test. Employer-sponsored pathways may have separate English requirements depending on the visa subclass.

All applicants for skilled and employer-sponsored visas, along with any family members included in the application, must meet health and character requirements set out under Australian migration law.

Labour Market & Employment Outlook

Carpentry remains one of the most consistently in-demand trade occupations in Australia, reflecting sustained residential and commercial construction activity nationally. Jobs and Skills Australia data identifies carpentry as an occupation experiencing shortage in a number of states and territories, across both metropolitan and regional labour markets. This sustained demand supports continued inclusion of the occupation across the relevant skilled migration occupation lists, though occupation lists and state nomination priorities are reviewed periodically and can change.

常見問題

Can I include my family members in my visa application?

黑色加號

Eligible family members can generally be included in most skilled and employer-sponsored visa applications, subject to meeting health, character and other relevant criteria. Our migration lawyers can confirm which family members can be included in your specific application.

Can overseas work experience count toward points?

黑色加號

Skilled employment experience, including relevant overseas experience, can contribute toward the points test for eligible points-tested visas, subject to meeting Department of Home Affairs requirements. Our migration lawyers can assess how your specific work history may apply.

Do I need a TRA skills assessment to migrate as a Carpenter?

黑色加號

Yes. A positive skills assessment from Trades Recognition Australia is a mandatory requirement for skilled and employer-sponsored visa pathways for Carpenter (ANZSCO 331212).

Does Australia require a licence to work as a Carpenter?

黑色加號

Carpenters employed by an Australian building company generally do not require an individual trade licence. Carpenters operating as contractors or subcontractors typically need to hold licensing or registration through their state or territory regulator once work exceeds a set value threshold.

Is Carpenter (331212) the same as Carpenter and Joiner (331211)?

黑色加號

Not necessarily. The two occupations sit under related but separate ANZSCO codes, and the correct one depends on whether your background is primarily site-based construction work or includes substantial workshop joinery and cabinetmaking. Getting this wrong can affect your skills assessment outcome, so it's worth confirming the right code with a migration lawyer before you apply.

Is English proficiency required?

黑色加號

Yes. Points-tested skilled visas require a minimum standard of English language ability through an approved test, and some employer-sponsored pathways carry separate English requirements.

What is the employment outlook for Carpenters?

黑色加號

Carpentry is identified by Jobs and Skills Australia as an occupation in shortage across several states and territories, reflecting sustained demand from Australia's construction sector.

What qualifications do I need for Carpentry in Australia?

黑色加號

TRA assesses whether your overseas qualifications and work experience are comparable to the Australian Certificate III in Carpentry. Relevant trade qualifications, apprenticeship records and detailed employment references are generally required to support this assessment.
