Our Success Stories

Frequently asked questions about the citizenship test

What should be studied before sitting the official test?

The official Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond booklet is the primary study resource and is available through the Department of Home Affairs. This practice test provides a useful readiness check ahead of independent study using the booklet.

Is a migration lawyer required to apply for citizenship?

A migration lawyer is not a legal requirement to apply for citizenship. However, citizenship applications can become complex around residence absences, character requirements, and prior visa history. An AML migration lawyer can review individual circumstances before an application is lodged, so any issues are identified early rather than after a refusal.

What happens after passing the citizenship test?

Passing the test is one part of the citizenship application process. Other eligibility requirements must still be met, and attendance at a citizenship ceremony is required if the application is approved. AML can guide applicants through the full process.

Does this practice test the same as the official test?

No. This practice test is based on the same source booklet and structure as the official test, though the actual test questions will differ. It is intended to identify gaps in understanding ahead of the official test.

How many times can I sit the real citizenship test?

Limits apply to the number of attempts permitted, and how soon a retake may be sat following an unsuccessful attempt. A migration lawyer can advise on the current rules and the implications of an unsuccessful first attempt.

How long do I have to complete the test?

This practice test allows 45 minutes, matching the time allowed for the official test.

Why do the Australian values questions need a perfect score?

The Department of Home Affairs treats the values section differently from the rest of the test, as it specifically assesses understanding of the values underpinning Australian citizenship, rather than general knowledge.

What score do I need to pass?

A minimum of 75% overall is required, along with a correct answer to 100% of the Australian values questions. An incorrect answer on any values of question results in an unsuccessful outcome, regardless of the overall score.

How many questions are in the real citizenship test?

The official test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions; the same format used in this practice test. Official test questions will differ from this practice set, so it should be used to assess general understanding rather than to memorise specific answers.

What is the Australian citizenship test based on?

The official test is based on the Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond resource booklet, covering Australia's people, democratic beliefs, government and the law, and Australian values. This practice test follows the same structure.
