Sponsorship by an eligible Australian citizen or permanent resident
Proof of genuine family relationship
Health and character requirements
Financial and sponsorship obligations
Identity and passport documents
Valid identification documents are needed to confirm identity and citizenship.
Proof of family relationship
Supporting evidence, such as marriage certificates, birth records, or comparable documentation, is needed to establish the relationship claimed.
Sponsorship documents
Sponsors need to supply documentation confirming both their eligibility and their capacity to support the application.
Financial and supporting evidence
Financial documents and other relevant supporting evidence may be needed from applicants and sponsors, depending on the visa criteria.
Health and character documentation
Meeting visa requirements generally involves medical examinations and police clearances.
We start with a thorough review of your circumstances, covering eligibility, available visa options, and any complexities that may arise.
A detailed application is put together, addressing all legal requirements and compiling the necessary supporting evidence.
The application is lodged with the Department of Home Affairs for assessment.
Continued communication and legal support throughout the process are important for responding to requests and tracking the application's progress.
Family visa applications frequently involve complicated legal and evidentiary demands. Working with a migration lawyer can help ensure your application is prepared correctly under current law and backed by the right supporting documentation.
Legal guidance can also help catch potential issues before they cause problems, strengthen the application, and present your case clearly to the decision-maker, which matters particularly in cases involving complex family circumstances or previous visa issues.
Australian Migration Lawyers provides tailored advice and continued support for family visa matters. Contact our Canberra team to discuss your circumstances and receive professional guidance.

Australia's family visa options include partner, parent, child and other relative visas, along with family-sponsored options covering relatives such as siblings and dependants, each carrying its own eligibility requirements.
Processing times differ according to the visa subclass, the complexity of the application, and current Departmental priorities.
Eligible Australian citizens and permanent residents may be able to sponsor certain family members, including relatives such as siblings and other dependants, subject to satisfying the relevant legal requirements. Sponsors are required to submit the correct forms and support documentation as part of the process.
Typical documentation includes identity records, proof of relationships, sponsorship paperwork, and other supporting evidence relevant to the visa criteria. A birth certificate is often needed to confirm a child's relationship with their parent and to verify identity, and character checks are usually required for applicants above a certain age.
Depending on individual circumstances, there may be options to seek a review of the decision or consider an alternative visa pathway, and legal advice can help identify the right course of action.
