Eligibility for ACT State Nomination
Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) for the ACT
Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491) Pathways
Occupations in Demand in the ACT
Canberra continues to attract skilled professionals across sectors tied closely to its economy, including public administration, health services, education, and technology.
ACT nomination offers an additional route for applicants who might not meet the threshold for independent migration. For those who qualify, it provides a direct pathway to permanent residency and can strengthen an overall points position, improving the likelihood of receiving an invitation to apply.
As the seat of national government, Canberra offers a stable public sector job market alongside strong healthcare, education, and community infrastructure, making it an appealing long-term base for skilled migrants.
Many skilled migrants move from a temporary visa to permanent residency through structured pathways that depend on ongoing employment, residency, and compliance with visa conditions.

Meeting the points test for skilled migration
Occupation listed on the Skilled Occupation List
Positive skills assessment from the relevant authority
English language proficiency requirements
Health and character requirements
Passport and identity documents
Valid identification documents are required to confirm identity and citizenship.
Skills assessment documents
Evidence of a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority must be provided.
Employment and work experience evidence
Documentation supporting employment history, including references and contracts, is essential. If claiming skilled employment — meaning work at skill levels 1, 2 or 3 under the ANZSCO classification — supporting evidence of this is required. When calculating annual earnings for a skilled migration nomination in Canberra, the figure should reflect total compensation received, excluding superannuation and before income tax.
英语测试结果
Recognised English test results should be submitted where required.
Educational qualifications and transcripts
Academic records are needed to demonstrate qualifications and to support the skills assessment.
This process usually starts with a detailed review of your eligibility, covering points, occupation and available visa options.
Applicants need a positive skills assessment before lodging an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.
Once invited, applicants can proceed to lodge a visa application supported by comprehensive documentation.
Ongoing communication with the Department matters throughout, and continued legal support can help address any requests or issues that come up.
Working with a skilled migration lawyer helps ensure your application is prepared in line with current migration law and policy. Legal guidance can identify potential risks early, strengthen your supporting evidence, and present your case clearly to the decision-maker.
Professional assistance can also reduce delays, since a decision-ready application that meets Departmental requirements is less likely to attract further requests for information.
Our Canberra migration lawyers offer tailored advice and strategic support throughout your skilled migration journey. Contact Australian Migration Lawyers to discuss your circumstances.
Government visa application fees
As at 1 July 2026, the base visa application charge for the primary applicant is $6,135 for the Subclass 189 or Subclass 190, and $6,140 for the Subclass 491.
Skills assessment and testing costs
Fees may apply when obtaining a skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority.
English language testing fees
Costs may be incurred for a recognised English language test where one is required.
Legal and professional service fees
Professional fees depend on the complexity of your case and the level of legal support required.
Skilled income threshold requirements
Sponsored positions also need to meet the relevant minimum salary threshold. As at 1 July 2026, the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT), applying to the Subclass 482 Core Skills stream and the Subclass 186, is $79,423. The Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT), applying to the Subclass 482 Specialist Skills stream, is $146,576. The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT), applying to the Subclass 494 and Subclass 187, is $79,423.
Factors affecting skilled visa processing times
Processing times can be affected by how complete the application is, demand for the nominated occupation, and Departmental priorities.
Typical timelines for Subclass 189, 190 and 491 visas
The Department publishes indicative processing times, but actual timelines can differ depending on individual circumstances and application volumes. For the ACT specifically, Subclass 190 and 491 nominations also depend on invitation rounds under the Canberra Matrix, which run periodically through the program year.
Insufficient points to meet migration requirements
An application can be refused if the required points threshold isn't met at the time of invitation.
Incorrect or incomplete documentation
Providing inaccurate or incomplete documentation can lead to refusal.
Negative skills assessment outcome
An unfavourable skills assessment outcome can affect eligibility for the visa.
未达到英语语言要求
Applicants need to meet the required English language standard to qualify.
Canberra offers skilled migrants a stable, well-resourced city built around the public sector, alongside strong opportunities in health, education, and technology. Its comparatively low population and high standard of public infrastructure make it an attractive option for professionals seeking long-term career growth without the scale of Australia's larger capital cities.
Our team offers comprehensive legal support for skilled migration matters, combining technical knowledge with practical experience, including with the ACT's own Canberra Matrix nomination system. We focus on clear advice, thorough preparation, and ongoing support to help put the strongest possible application forward.
