Our Canberra migration lawyers provide practical, well-informed guidance to help families navigate the parent visa system and put forward an application that is thoroughly prepared.

Many families weighing up a parent visa prefer to discuss their options directly with a lawyer, rather than working through the pathways alone. Our Canberra office offers in-person consultations for families who would rather talk through their circumstances face to face.
During this first meeting, a migration lawyer will explain the pathway options available to your family, including the contributory versus non-contributory decision and what it means for cost and waiting time. Fees are agreed in advance, giving you clarity on cost before any work commences.
Families who are unable to attend in person can access the same consultation online, with no difference in the guidance provided.

Sponsorship by an eligible child in Australia
Balance of family test requirements
Health and character requirements
Assurance of Support obligations
Identity and passport documents
A valid passport and other personal identification documents are required from applicants.
Proof of relationship with the sponsoring child
Evidence establishing the parent-child relationship must be provided in accordance with migration requirements.
Evidence to meet the balance of family test
Documentation is required to demonstrate that the balance of family test has been satisfied.
Financial documents for Assurance of Support
Sponsors may need to supply financial records and formally undertake the Assurance of Support obligations.
Health and character documentation
Medical examinations and police clearances are typically required to satisfy visa conditions.
We begin with a detailed eligibility review, including sponsorship arrangements and identifying the most suitable visa pathway.
A comprehensive application is prepared, covering all required supporting documents and relevant legal considerations.
The application is submitted to the Department of Home Affairs for assessment.
We remain in contact with the Department throughout the process, assisting with requests and managing any delays or complications.
Deciding between the contributory and non-contributory pathways carries genuine financial and timing implications, and this decision is not always easy for families to work through unassisted. A lawyer can explain what each option means in practical terms for your family's specific circumstances.
Getting the eligibility criteria and supporting documentation right from the start also matters a great deal, given how long some pathways take to reach a decision. Addressing potential gaps early can prevent issues from surfacing only after years of waiting.
Our Canberra team supports families across the full parent visa journey, from selecting a pathway through to lodgement and ongoing case management. Contact our Canberra office to discuss your family's circumstances.
Government parent visa application fees
The amount payable depends on whether the contributory or non-contributory pathway is chosen, with charges set by the Department of Home Affairs. As at 1 July 2026, indicative base application charges include:
Subclass 103 (non-contributory): $6,600 primary applicant, $3,300 each additional applicant aged 18 or over, $1,655 each additional applicant under 18.
Subclass 143 and 864 (contributory): $6,300 first instalment for the primary applicant, plus $2,125 (Subclass 143) or $3,145 (Subclass 864) for each additional applicant aged 18 or over, and $1,065 (Subclass 143) or $1,580 (Subclass 864) for each additional applicant under 18. A second instalment of $43,600 per applicant is payable before grant, bringing the total cost for a single applicant to approximately $49,900. These charges do not include additional costs such as health checks or police certificates.
Assurance of Support financial obligations
Where an Assurance of Support is required, sponsors or approved assurers may need to provide a bank guarantee or term deposit. As at 1 July 2026, an individual assurer's bond is $5,000 for the primary applicant plus $2,000 per adult secondary applicant on the Subclass 103 or 804, rising to $10,000 plus $4,000 per adult secondary applicant on the Subclass 143 or 864. The Subclass 143 and 864 carry a 10-year assurance obligation period, compared with 2 years for the Subclass 103 and 804.
Legal and professional service fees
Legal fees vary depending on the complexity of the matter and the level of support required.
Health checks and documentation costs
Applicants may need to budget for medical examinations, police clearances, and other supporting documentation.
Factors affecting parent visa processing
Processing timeframes are shaped by the visa subclass, the volume of applications in the system, and individual circumstances.
Typical waiting periods for contributory and non-contributory visas
Contributory pathways are generally processed more quickly than non-contributory pathways, which can involve substantially longer waiting periods.
Failure to meet the balance of family test
An application may be refused where the balance of family test is not satisfied.
Incomplete sponsorship documentation
Missing or incorrect sponsorship evidence can result in refusal.
Health or character issues
Eligibility for the visa can be affected where health or character requirements are not met.
财务证据不足
Weak financial documentation, or a failure to meet Assurance of Support obligations, can affect the outcome of an application.
Canberra offers families a stable, well-planned environment for parents to settle into, supported by strong public healthcare services, respected education institutions, and a close-knit community. Bringing a parent to Australia is about far more than paperwork, it matters deeply to the families involved. Our Canberra migration lawyers focus on giving families an honest, clear-eyed view of their options and preparing applications that are properly supported from the outset.
