Typical processing timelines for family visas
Indicative timelines are published, but actual processing can run considerably longer than expected, and remaining relative visa processing time in particular has lengthened given how limited annual places are.

Not meeting sponsorship requirements can affect the outcome of the application.

Hobart is Australia's second-oldest capital city, founded in 1804 as a British penal colony on the banks of the Derwent River. The Palawa people are the traditional custodians of the land, and their presence in Tasmania dates back at least 35,000 years. European settlement brought convicts primarily from England, Ireland, and Scotland, and the cessation of transportation in 1853 marked the beginning of Hobart's transition toward a free settler society. The post-World War II era brought migrants from Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia, and Poland to Hobart, gradually diversifying a city that had remained predominantly Anglo-Celtic throughout its early history. In more recent decades, Hobart has welcomed humanitarian entrants and skilled migrants from China, India, Bhutan, Nepal, and across Southeast Asia. Today, Hobart retains the highest proportion of Australian-born residents among Australia's capital cities, but its migrant community continues to grow steadily, enriching the city's cultural fabric and contributing to its ongoing economic recovery and growth. Australia offers a range of family visas, including partner, parent, child, and other relative visas, along with family-sponsored options covering relatives such as siblings and dependent family members, each with its own eligibility requirements.
Processing times vary depending on the visa subclass, the complexity of the application, and Departmental priorities.
Eligible Australian citizens and permanent residents may be able to sponsor certain family members, including relatives such as siblings and other dependent family members, subject to meeting legal requirements. Sponsors need to submit the appropriate forms and documentation as part of the family visa application.
Required documents typically include identity records, proof of relationship, sponsorship documentation, and supporting evidence relevant to the visa criteria. A birth certificate is commonly needed to establish a child's relationship with their parent and verify identity, and character checks are usually required for applicants over a certain age.
Depending on the circumstances, there may be options to seek review of the decision or explore alternative visa pathways, and legal advice can help determine the right course of action.
