Sponsorship by an eligible child in Australia
Balance of family test requirements
Health and character requirements
Assurance of Support obligations
Identity and passport documents
Applicants must provide valid identity documentation, including passports and personal identification records.
Proof of relationship with the sponsoring child
Evidence must be provided to demonstrate the parent-child relationship in accordance with migration requirements.
Evidence to meet the balance of family test
Documentation is required to establish that the balance of family test is satisfied.
Financial documents for Assurance of Support
Sponsors may need to provide financial records and undertake obligations as part of the Assurance of Support requirement.
Health and character documentation
Medical examinations and police clearances are generally required to satisfy visa conditions.
The process begins with a detailed assessment of eligibility, including sponsorship arrangements and visa pathway options.
A comprehensive application is prepared, including all required supporting documentation and legal considerations.
The application is lodged with the Department of Home Affairs for assessment. For contributory pathways, this is the first of two payments, with the parent visa second instalment payable later, closer to visa grant.
Ongoing communication with the Department is important, and legal support assists in responding to requests and managing delays or complications.
Parent visa applications are often complex and involve long-term commitments, particularly in relation to financial obligations and eligibility requirements. Engaging a migration lawyer can help make sure your application is properly prepared and supported by relevant evidence.
Legal guidance can also help identify potential issues early, reduce the risk of delays, and help you stay compliant with Departmental requirements throughout the process.
Australian Migration Lawyers provides tailored legal advice and ongoing support for parent visa applications. Contact our Gold Coast team to discuss your family circumstances.
Government parent visa application fees
As of 1 July 2026, government fees vary by pathway:
Non-contributory Subclass 103 visa: $6,600 primary applicant, $3,300 each additional applicant aged 18 or over, $1,655 each additional applicant under 18.
Contributory Subclass 143 and Subclass 864 pathways: first instalment of $6,300, plus $2,125 (143) or $3,145 (864) for each additional applicant aged 18 or over, with a second instalment of $43,600 payable before the visa is granted, bringing the contributory parent visa cost to approximately $49,900 in total for a single applicant.
Assurance of Support financial obligations
Sponsors may be required to provide financial undertakings as part of the Assurance of Support requirement.
Legal and professional service fees
Legal fees vary depending on the complexity of the application and the level of assistance required.
Health checks and documentation costs
Applicants may incur costs for medical examinations, police checks, and other supporting documentation.
Factors affecting parent visa processing
Processing times vary significantly depending on visa type, application volume, and individual circumstances.
Typical waiting periods for contributory and non-contributory visas
Contributory visas generally have shorter processing times compared to non-contributory visas, where the wait can run considerably longer, given the size of the queue relative to the number of places available each year.
Failure to meet the balance of family test
Applications may be refused if the balance of family test isn't satisfied.
Incomplete sponsorship documentation
Insufficient or incorrect sponsorship evidence can result in refusal.
Health or character issues
Failure to meet health or character requirements may impact visa eligibility.
Insufficient financial evidence
Inadequate financial documentation or inability to meet Assurance of Support obligations may affect the outcome.
